As we approach the end of 2017 and begin to face 2018, I think back to when our founding fathers sat down to start the process of one of the greatest documents of this country, “The Constitution” and “The Bill of Rights”. We all know what the 1st Amendment refers to: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. When you consider this one simple phrase, one understands the tremendous impact and forethought these men had.
There is another set of laws that was handed down to all mankind over 3000 years ago. These laws were given to us by none other than the” Lord our God”. “The Ten Commandants” These ten very simple but clearly common sense laws are so ingrained in all mankind that even to this day most of us at least know half of them, hopefully. As your chaplain, I know that I am guilty of breaking some of them, most common being the use of God’s name in vain. Whenever I am in your post and hear God’s name being used this way, I cringe not only for me but the person who used such language. Let’s all make a “New Year’s Resolution” that foul or obscene language will not be tolerated in our Post any longer. God gave us the “The Ten Commandants“ to better serve and guide us through life so that we can all be better stewards of his promise he made on the cross of Galilee. We as the defenders of our nation and its rights should set the examples of these laws given to us.

Jesus was in the boat, asleep. He had said, “Let’s cross over to the other side (of this lake). Some religious scholars say the message here could be that “going to the other side” was meant to also describe out journey through life to the other side. If you know this story, there was a terrible storm that night, and they woke him and he calmed the waters. That is folks, you will encounter storms during your ride to the other side, that is a guarantee; best idea for survival is the have Jesus in your boat!
