AUGUST 2019

I hope everyone is having a terrific summer.  Just a couple of thoughts and reminders before our meeting in September.

Meetings are on the 2nd Wednesday of the month — September 11, 2019 is the first meeting.  This meeting will be an organizational meeting to determine what we want to accomplish this Auxiliary year along with reports of what we accomplished over the summer.

Unit 44 won two awards for the Poppy Program at the June convention.  We are thinking about our Poppy Program and if you are interested in assisting with making poppies, please let us know.

Unit 44 representatives along with two members of the Post 44 Honor Guard gave a presentation to residents of The Springs of Scottsdale on Flag Day.  We gave out flags as well as the American Legion Flag Etiquette pamphlet.

2020 membership cards are available for dues renewal. Dues remain $35.00 per year.

Bingo continues to be our successful fundraiser.  Thank you to everyone who participates in helping as well as playing.

See you in a few weeks at our meeting or if you are at the Post for our many regular events.

For God and Country — Service, Not Self

June Moyer, President

JUNE 2019

WOW…unfortunately it has been six months since I updated information on the Auxiliary page.  I know “time flies when you are having fun” and it seems we have been having a lot of fun at Post 44 as our Legion Family has been busy.  Now it’s summer and many members are away to their summer homes or traveling.  We hope you all have many good times.

Unit 44 has been very busy with our patriotic events and poppy program.  We will be presenting our poppy program at the State Convention the weekend of June 20-23, 2019.  We are excited to present what Unit 44 has been doing.

New officers were elected and installed at the May meeting.  President, June Moyer; Vice President, Lylia Thomas; Secretary, Susi Nicholson-Doerr; Treasurer, Ann Sinclair; Chaplain, Linda Chapple; Executive Committee: Kathy Wright, Elaine Elliott, Sharon Kroger.  We still have our Historian position open.  If you are interested, please contact one of our officers.

Also at the May meeting we voted to change our meeting nights from the 2nd Monday of the month to the 2nd Wednesday of the month.  This will start in September 2019 after the summer months during which we do not have a regular general membership meeting.  Please put September 11, 2019 on your calendar.  The meeting begins at 6 PM.

The strength of your Post depends not only on the number of our membership, but also on the vitality of our volunteer members. Countless events could not take place at your Post – and outside the Post – without the support of volunteers.  During the last couple of months and continuing through the next month(s), our Volunteer program is “under construction” so to speak with emphasis on the communication and organization of our volunteers as well as community outreach.  Please contact one of your officers if you have an interest in the diversity of programs at Post 44.  If you have not filled out a volunteer form, please do so.  They are located on the wall in the area of the bulletin boards.

Enjoy your summer!!!

For God and Country,

Service, Not Self

June Moyer, Unit 44 President

September 2018

September’s meeting on the 10th was full of updates from the summer months including:

Our annual membership goal set forth by the National organization is 496 members for Unit 44 2018-2019 Auxiliary year. This includes renewals and new members.  We can do it!!

Sunday Bar Bingo has been very successful.  We will be continuing Bar Bingo on Sunday indefinitely.  So, Bingo sponsored by Unit 44 Auxiliary is held on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday.

Some of our funds from Sunday Bar Bingo assisted the Post in the restoration of the bar in Patriot’s Hall.  Restoration has begun, and the new bar will be ready for the upcoming busy season.

We hosted the American Legion Auxiliary Arizona Mission Training class on August 4 and Sept. 8.  The information was very helpful in understanding our programs and what we do to assist the American Legion.

Several new members have joined or transferred to Unit 44 — WELCOME.

We are accepting donations for new children’s books to be given out during Vista Del Camino’s Christmas gift program.

October is National Cancer Awareness Month.  We will be supporting this effort for donations to the American Cancer Society.

Auxiliary meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month.  General meeting starts at 6:00 pm.  We try to keep our meetings to an hour…we would love to see you there.

We look forward to a successful year for Unit 44!!

For God and Country,

June

July 2018

Busy summertime for Unit 44 working with the other family members – Post 44, Squadron 44, ALR 44.  Many things have been accomplished:

  • Our May events were very successful especially National Poppy Day on May 25th. We started with our raffle the week before and was able to keep the Poppy display in the hallway for the following week.  Many donations were given as members and guests enjoyed the display and available information about the Poppy story.
  • The “store/gift shop” being sponsored by the Auxiliary is getting stocked with many new items, different size and type of shirts, more Poppy pins, etc.
  • The June 23rd fundraiser in which we all participated was very successful for Post 44. It was a terrific and fun night for everyone.
  • I attended the State Convention June 21-24 and was able to get a few of our membership questions answered. A membership seminar will be held at Post 41 on Saturday July 28 for anyone interested in joining us to discuss the membership goals for 2018-2019.
  • Bingo continues to be very successful. On Sunday afternoon in June, July, and August, while Trivia takes a break, we have had Bar Bingo from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Everyone has had a terrific time and the Auxiliary has seen good income for our Veteran charities.
  • August 4, 2018, Unit 44 will host a District 12 Leadership seminar from 10 am to 2 pm. Anyone interested is invited; however, Unit officers should attend if possible.

We hope everyone is having a terrific summer.  Cool weather will be here soon!!

For God and Country,

June

May 3, 2018

Post 44 seems to always be a busy place.  Several events coming in May.

Bingo is still going strong although many winter visitors have left or are leaving.  However, we don’t think we will be affected as many of our regular players live here year ’round.  If you have a chance, please join us on Monday 3:00 to 5:00 pm or Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30

The Auxiliary has been asked to handle the “Store” for the Post.  We will be taking care of inventory for the items we feel the Post will have available.  The display case inside the front door has been designed and will be a work in progress as we develop the inventory.  Any suggestions for items we can provide to our members and guests are welcome.

May 13 is Mother’s Day Brunch.  Details are on the website, FB, and at the Post.  May 14, 2018 is our monthly meeting which will include election and installation of 2018-2019 officers. Please plan to join us. Meetings for June, July, and August are canceled this year.  Communication regarding any information for the Auxiliary and events at Post 44 will continue to be communicated via email, Post 44 website and FB.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions for Unit 44. We look forward to seeing you at our May meeting and/or at Post 44.

For God and Country,

June

Wow…where did August go???  The August planning meeting was very productive and many ideas were generated.  Our next meeting is Monday September 11, 2017 (only a few days away from this writing).  We have several updates on the agenda as well as we will Drape the Charter for two of our members – Glenda Stevens (was not done in August) and Billie Rich.

The E-Committee will also decide on the method by which we will fill our vacancies.  We have some interested individuals; however, if ANYONE is interested in Auxiliary office of Treasurer, Chaplain, or the Executive Committee, please send an email to Auxiliary@post44.com; or call June at 602-689-8937.  We have some exciting months ahead and always appreciate our volunteers.  Thank you to our volunteers who have been assisting at our very successful Queen of Hearts Raffle.

Hope everyone had a terrific summer and Fall will be in the air soon!!  See you soon at our meeting or at the Post activities.

For God and Country,

June Moyer, President

July 10, 2017

Happy Summer!!  Many things going on at Post 44.  Unit 44 has been busy as well.  Election of 2017-2018 officers occurred at the May meeting:  President, June Moyer, Vice President, Shirley Spencer, Secretary, Susi Nicholson-Doerr, Treasurer, Maude Hyde, Peggy Vale, Historian, Sgt.-at-Arms, Lylia Thomas, E-Committee, Dee Hamilton, Carole Gingrich, Sandy Sheridan, Theresa Estes, April Miyasato.  Chaplain position is vacant and a suggestion was made to rotate interested members to that position each month.  June meeting accomplished many end of fiscal year items and installation of the new officers.

July meeting was not scheduled although we are still renewing and getting new memberships.  Unfortunately, we also received two officer resignations – Theresa Estes from the E-Committee and Maude Hyde as Treasurer.  Although we regret their decision, we truly appreciate everything they have contributed to Unit 44 over several years of service.  Therefore, we are asking for anyone interested in these positions (E-Committee, Treasurer, or even our vacant Chaplain position) to contact Unit 44 office at Auxiliary@post44.com.

The August Auxiliary meeting will be held on the second Monday, August 14 at 6:00 PM.  A few items on the agenda including draping the charter for Glenda Stevens.  Primarily, we will be brainstorming the upcoming Auxiliary year and fund-raising projects and possibilities.  Please plan to join us.

For God and Country,

June

May 9, 2017

Thank you to everyone who attended the May 8, 2017 meeting.  We had election of

2017-2018 officers and an agenda full of things that are happening for us to support Post 44.  2017-2018 officers are:

President, June Moyer

1st Vice President, Shirley Spencer

Secretary, Susi Nicholson-Doerr

Treasurer, Maude Hyde

Sgt-at-Arms, Lylia Thomas

Historian, Peggy Vale

Executive Committee — Dee Hamilton, Carole Gingrich, Sandy Sheridan, Theresa Estes, April Miyasato.

We currently do not have a Chaplain but a suggestion was made that we could have a different person to handle the Chaplain duties each month.  Sounds like a good idea to try; in fact, we have a volunteer for the June meeting on June 12, 2017

— April Miyasato.

May is a busy month:

— Decorating for Mother’s Day and Memorial Day — May 13 and May 16

— May 20th is Armed Forces Day

— May 26th is National Poppy Day

— May 29th is Memorial Day — we will also draw the winning tickets for our fund raising raffle.

We will have a meeting in June (June 12, 2017) at which time we will conduct installation of officers as well as our other committee reports. We will not have a meeting in July but will have a meeting in August.  On August 14, 2017, our meeting will basically be our “pre-planning” meeting that we have each August.  So think about what we can accomplish during 2017-2018 for that meeting.  Meeting times are 6:00 pm.

For God and Country,

June

——————————————————

April 26, 2017

Monday May 8, 2017 is our regularly scheduled monthly meeting.  We will be conducting election of Unit 2017-2018 officers and then proceed with installation.  Please plan to join us as we have ladies interested in more than one office and will have a ballot.  In addition, our bylaws specify we can take nominations from the floor.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in helping with Monday Bingo and/or Bar Bingo on the 4th Thursday of each month.  We are covered for April 27th; however, we do need volunteers for Thursday 5/25.  Due to graduation ceremonies and some individuals out of town, we will need at least 4 people — cashier, caller, two sellers.  If you are interested and have not filled out an affidavit or helped previously and wish to observe and learn, please come down to Post 44 Thursday 5/27.

We have also begun selling tickets for our fund raiser raffle to support our general fund and Girls’ State.  If anyone can assist with this event on Thursday, Friday, Saturday evenings or Sunday Brunch, please let me know. The

drawing will be conducted on Memorial Day.   We will discuss this further at our meeting on May 8.

May functions at Post 44:

Friday May 5, Cinco de Mayo celebration — decorating for this event will be Friday 4/28 at 9:30 am.  Please join us.  Thanks Saturday May 6, Kentucky Derby Day Monday May 8, Auxiliary meeting — 6:00 pm Sunday May 14, Mother’s Day Brunch Monday May 29, Memorial Day Ceremonies at Camelback Cemetery at 8:00 am and then the Civic Center at 10:00 am.  We need a volunteer from the Auxiliary to lay the wreath.  Thank you.

Please let me know via email or phone (602) 689-8937 if you have any questions, suggestions, etc.

March 23, 2017

Thank you to everyone who donated items for Mary Ellen’s Place at our March 13th meeting.  We will be getting an updated list of any additional items needed and will get that information to you.  Joan Sisco expressed her appreciation of our support and provided some stories of the success of those women who are assisted by Veterans’ First/Mary Ellen’s Place.

March events at Post 44 have been very fun and don’t forget our March 29th Joint Initiation Ceremony.  An email has been sent to the new 2016-2017 members; however, if you know of anyone that has not been initiated, please spread the word about this event.

It is that time of year (already) for anyone interested in becoming an officer of Unit 44 Auxiliary to let us know.  Our Nominating Committee (April Miyasato, Sue Fay, Peggy Vale) are working on our slate of officers.  Please contact April at ajmiya620@gmail.com if you are interested.  The slate of officers will be presented at our April 10th meeting.  Election and installation of officers will be at our May 8th meeting.

Calling all volunteers – Post 44 is asking anyone interested in volunteering to please sign up on the volunteer sheet in the hallway across from the Post 44 office.  We need volunteers for kitchen, bingo, decorating, and general assistance.

We look forward to seeing you at Post 44 and especially at our next Auxiliary meeting on April 10, 2017.

For God and Country,

June Moyer, President Unit 44

March 2, 2017

REMINDER:

The following items are needed for Mary Ellen’s Place.  Please bring a donation to the March 13, 2017 meeting.  Joan Cisco, CEO of Veterans’ First/Mary Ellen’s Place will be at the meeting.

Tall kitchen trash can 10 to 13 gallon (6 each)

Small bathroom trash can (6 each)

Shower curtain and liner—light blue, light yellow, light pink, light green (8 each)

Rugs—2—for each bathroom 17”x20” and 20”x30” (same colors as for shower curtains or neutral colors)

No slip mat for showers (6 each)

3-quart sauce pan with lid (6 each)

DESPERATE – Oster 2 burner hotplate with no coils due to fire hazard.  Need 5 each.

Our February 13, 2017 meeting was very productive and we appreciated the remarks from Stacey Mayberry, ALA AZ District 12 President.  She encouraged us to continue our efforts with membership renewals and new members.  She also talked about the ALA “brand” and she was encouraged by several of us who were wearing our shirts with the ALA logo.

We also had a visit from Janet Lee with Anchor House.  She gave us information about this facility – The Anchor House provides support to single mothers who need help recovering from poverty, homelessness, and difficult circumstances.  The baby shower gifts we brought were given to Janet to help with their supplies.

Reports were given regarding the successful events in which our Unit participated with Legionnaires; i.e. Luau was very fun and generated $122 in donations for our general fund/Girls’ State from the Poppy Leis; Parada Del Sol Parade was a tremendous success for the entire Post 44 family.  Thank you to the decorators who assisted in making the event very special.

The new bar stools we approved and ordered arrived and are a nice addition to our lounge.

Upcoming events – March 13, Unit 44 monthly meeting, March 17, St Patrick’s Day; March 29, Joint Initiation Ceremony.  Please spread the word – if you are a new member or a “seasoned” member and have not attended our Initiation Ceremony, please plan on doing so.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, suggestions, comments, etc.

February 1, 2017

Even though I have meant to get information to you on a regular basis — “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”?

However, we have been busy and it seems the days go swiftly by.  Our meeting on January 9, 2017 was very productive and interesting.  Barbara White, Department of AZ Community Service Chairman, provided good insight as to what we can record as Service to Veterans vs. Community Service.  She suggested that we look at the many pieces of information on our National website–www.alaforveterans.org.

We are always in need of volunteers for our many activities at the Post including those sponsored by the Auxiliary.  If you could give us 2-4 hours per month, it will be greatly appreciated; i.e., Monday Bingo, Thursday night Bar Bingo, events as they are scheduled, etc.  Thank you to those of you who have assisted with the Post decorations particularly our most recent and really fun event–the Luau.  We are also in need of volunteers to help with decorations for Parada Del Sol, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, etc.  Unfortunately, our Decorations Committee chairman is having some medical issues and has had to resign.  (Feel better soon, Patty).  If anyone is interested in chairing the Decorations Committee, please let us know so we can meet and discuss the process.

Parada Del Sol parade arrangements are coming along fine.  We have room for people to ride on the float, in the cars, or walk the parade.  Please plan to join us…this day is a tradition at Post 44 and is always a really good, fun event. We will gather at the Post at 8:30 am to make our way to the staging area.

DATES TO PUT ON YOUR CALENDAR:

–FEBRUARY 13, 2017 — UNIT 44 AUXILIARY MONTHLY MEETING — DISTRICT 12 PRESIDENT STACY MAYBERRY WILL BE HERE FOR HER OFFICIAL VISIT TO OUR UNIT.

–FEBRUARY 13, 2017 — BRING THE ITEMS FOR THE BABY SHOWER THAT WE WILL ORGANIZE AFTER THE MEETING.

–ALSO CHECK OUT THE CALENDAR PAGES FOR ALL EVENTS AT POST/UNIT 44.

I received an email with a flyer attached for ALL HANDS ON DECK Show.  Check out the information on allhandsondeckshow.com.  They will be in Mesa on February 20, 21, 27, & 28.  Looks like it will be a really fun event.

I hope to see you at the Post, our Post/Unit events and especially at our next meeting Feb. 13th.  Bring a friend!!

Have a great day!

June

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Holidays to everyone. This is such a wonderful time of year and may each of you be blessed for all that you do for Post 44 and our Veterans.

Plans for many of our projects are progressing. The “Poppy Party” on December 1st was very successful, the November Core Committee meeting scheduled upcoming events for after the first of the year (Town Hall, Joint Initiation Ceremony, and the Past Commanders/Past Presidents Dinner to name a few). The Parada del Sol parade application is being submitted and volunteers will be needed in January to assist with decorating the Auxiliary “Float”. The American Legion Post 44 will be an entire unit with Honor Guard, Auxiliary and Riders being one group. Thank you to the decorating crew. The Post looks ready for the Holidays!

Auxiliary contributions from the Bingo account for our Veterans organizations will be sent by December 31, 2016 as required. A report will be presented at the January Auxiliary meeting.

The January Auxiliary meeting is January 9, 2017. We will have guests from the AZ Auxiliary Department to assist us with understanding the difference between Service to Veterans and Community Service. Please plan on joining us…6:00 pm general meeting at Post 44.

For God and Country,

June Moyer, President, Unit 44

 November 21, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. So much has been happening and Thanksgiving is here already. We have so many things to be thankful for but most of all our freedom, loyalty, justice, and democracy given to us by our many Veterans, past and present. May each of you have a blessed Holiday season.

Our November 14th meeting was very productive. Reports were given from the ALA Fall Conference, our membership (renewals have slowed down a bit—please renew your membership at any time), holiday decorating of the Post as well as assistance at the VA Gift Shop, our participation in the Parada Del Sol Parade, and a list of the charitable contributions for this calendar year was presented. In addition, we are in the process of getting information about renovation of the women’s bathroom. Bingo volunteers for Monday and Thursday are always needed. Our first meeting held on Monday, September 12, 2016 was very productive. We reported on the summer’s meetings; i.e., Audit Committee (finances are in good order), Pre-planning meeting with many ideas brought forward, and the Budget meeting. The Budget information will be discussed at the October 10th meeting. Welcome to our new members and it was good to see many familiar faces.

Please join us on September 21, 2016 for our first Town Hall meeting, 6:00 pm. Each representative of our Legion family will be answering any questions you may have.

We welcome everyone’s input and request volunteers for many activities. Your 2017 membership cards are available so you can pay your dues any time although you will be receiving renewal notices soon. Please feel free to contact any of the officers. My email is jlmoyer@cox.net or phone/text at 602-689-8937.

August 31, 2016

The August preplanning meeting for 2016-2017 was very successful.  We have developed several ideas for our fundraising efforts, talked about various committees that need volunteers, and are looking forward to a great year for Unit 44. We are responsible for Thursday night bar bingo and enjoy the camaraderie of our Post and Unit members.  If anyone is interested in helping, please let us know.  Please plan on attending our first meeting of the new Auxiliary year on Monday, September 12, 2016.  Executive committee meets at 5:30 pm and the general meeting is at 6:00 pm. Make sure you check the printed calendar at the Post and especially the website, post44.com, for the Club menu and events.  Many fun events are being scheduled for the Fall.

Auxiliary Community Service – Sue Fay

Community Service has continued during the summer through various Unit 44 programs. Three deliveries of food to Mary Ellen’s Place to provide food for Veteran women’s children were made during the summer. Thank you, all, for supporting the Red Bucket during the summer months! The Auxiliary provided a $300 check to the Salvation Army for their Hydration Program to provide the homeless and elderly with water during the very warm days this summer. The music program at the Veteran’s Home was supported by 3 Auxiliary members for 4 months this summer. Music is a great panacea for these fellows! Their spirits, after an hour of John’s piano and singing old songs, are truly uplifted.

The Memorial Day Poppy distribution was very successful. The Volunteers manned 2 centers on Saturday on Saturday, May 23. This effort educates the public about the significance of Poppies, as well as, raising money for the Veterans. We were privileged to have a cute younger Boy Scout with us.

The weather is always a topic of discussion this time of year.  Even though I am not there enjoying the heat of Arizona and especially the cool of the Legion, I hope you are. Or, you are on vacation.
Flag Day is always a very special patriotic event and from what I hear and see on the website it was again this year.   Thank you to everyone who participated and attended.
Please check the printed calendar at the Post and especially the website post44.com for all scheduled events.
The next scheduled meeting for Unit 44 is the 2nd Monday of September — September 12, 2016. This is our normal meeting date. We have scheduled a preplanning meeting for 2016-2017 on Wednesday August 10, 2016 at 11:00 am. We would appreciate your attendance as we are planning on setting our goals for this Auxiliary year and are interested in your ideas and assistance. For anyone unable to attend, please feel free to contact me at jlmoyer@cox.net, auxiliary@post44.com, or 602-689-8937 with your comments,  suggestions or interest in helping with our programs.
Thank you to everyone for your assistance and support especially while I have been away.

For God and Country,

June Moyer

We had a spectacular year at Unit 44.  3000 Volunteer hours were reported by our members to achieve our goals for cash and “in kind” donations for our combined Programs of Community  Service, Veteran Programs, and Children & Youth.
Food that was donated, monthly, for children of Veterans totaled $827.00 for the year.  $470 in donations of food was taken to Salvation Army, as well.  Our support of $300.00 for the Hydration Program at Salvation Army has been sent for their 2016 Summer Program.
The RED BUCKET is the source for food distributed for the benefit of children of Veterans.  Food is needed during the summer months, and your consideration to this cause is very much appreciated.  We need to keep the BUCKET full.
As you wear your Poppy this season, remember that every donation that is made for the Poppy, directly benefits our Veterans.  Veterans make the Poppies!  Younger folks do not know about the Poppies, so relate the story about the Poppies growing in Flanders Field whenever you can.
Thank you for your help, and have a safe summer!
